The theme for the 2009–10 celebrations will be "Awaken the Spirit" with a themed colour of blue. For the first time, microchip fireworks will be used in the show which last longer in the sky and are more accurate when synchronised with music. The fireworks show will consist of $5mil worth of fireworks running for twelve minutes. Event organisers have promised the most adventurous and sophisticated Bridge Effect to date. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, nine city buildings and seven barges will be used in the show.Mr Fornuato Foti from Foti Fireworks International revealed to the daily telegraph that the bridge effect will be a blue circle encased with red & gold which represents the blue moon.

Organisers of the Melbourne New Years Eve events and fireworks anticipate that the 2009-10 event will rivals Sydney's. Fireworks will be launched from the tops of several hundred buildings.



The Sydney Harbour New Year's Eve Fireworks are held every New Year's Eve, over Sydney Harbour, centering at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The event is officially known as Sydney New Year's Eve. They take place in two shows, a smaller show at 9pm (the 9pm Family Fireworks) and the major show at midnight (the Midnight Fireworks). The fireworks show has become the most-watched New Years Eve fireworks display in the world. Since 2000 the display has been designed and created by "Foti International Fireworks"

The fireworks are regularly viewed by more than one million people, with the New Year's Eve 2007 - 2008 display being viewed by 1.5 million people.[2] The display usually has a theme, with the 2009-2010 theme being "Awaken the Spirit". As of 2009-10,the television coverage will revert to the Nine Network and will be broadcast in two parts, matching the two displays.
